Where are the Arms
Where are the Arms marks a brilliant return to songwriting for musical polymath Gabriel Kahane. Following fast upon his recent successes in the worlds of classical and theater music, Kahane has turned his talents to the creation of a stunningly beautiful pop album. With its vivid lyrical foreground, swelling melodies and prismatic harmonies, Where are the Arms is both sophisticated and welcoming. And while the intricate chamber arrangements on songs like “Charming Disease” and “Barn Song” betray his gifts as an orchestrator, the album never loses sight of its primary focus on songcraft with fierce attention throughout given to melody and storytelling.
Co-produced with Casey Foubert, the wizard multi-instrumentalist best known for his work with Sufjan Stevens, Where are the Arms is colored with subtle production flourishes that never steal focus, while allowing the songs to unfold with elegant ease. Drawing on an all-star cast of friends, Kahane’s core band features Rob Moose (Antony and the Johnsons, Bon Iver, The National), Matt Johnson (Jeff Buckley, Rufus Wainwright), and Foubert, together with dozens of other notable guest appearances, including folk darlings Chris Thile and Aoife O'Donovan.
